Wan-Bissaka has yet to respond but is considering the opportunity to play for the African country. which would involve a switch of international allegiance.

If Wan-Bissaka accepts the chance, United would lose him for a spell in early 2024. The tournament — being staged by Ivory Coast — runs from January 13 to February 11.

The 25-year-old was born in England but is of Congolese descent and made a single appearance for the country’s Under-20 side in 2015.

He went on to play for England’s Under-20 and Under-21 teams but has not made his senior debut.

Wan-Bissaka was called up by manager Gareth Southgate for a pair of Euro 2020 qualifiers in September 2019, but returned to his club with a back injury.

The right-back is not the only United player who could leave for AFCON; goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Sofyan Amrabat are potential absentees, too.

There also remains uncertainty about Wan-Bissaka’s future at Old Trafford. His contract expires at the end of this season, although United retain an option to extend by 12 months.
