Former mufc midfielder Paul Ince urged Manchester United to be braver in the transfer window and not always feel that they need to chase the biggest names in the world.
Erik ten Hag has overseen roughly £400million of investment during his two seasons at the club and has drawn plenty of criticism for the huge fees spent on a number of players. United spent £86m on Antony, a further £72m on Rasmus Hojlund and committed to spending a possible £70m on Casemiro.
United typically end up paying a bit more money than other sides due to their reputation in the transfer market, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t bargains to be had elsewhere. Ince name-checked Jarrod Bowen as an example of the value to be had lower down the English football pyramid and also referenced Brighton’s wider scouting pool as evidence of the improvements that can be made.
“I think when you look at it, United have always had name players. The fans and everyone else expect them to bring in the biggest names because it is one of the biggest clubs in the world,” Ince told The Manchester Evening News thanks to luckyblock.com.
“When you look at what Jarrod Bowen’s done from Hull to West Ham, he is an exceptional player. There are little nuggets out there that you can get that don’t always have to be worth £60 or £70million.
“When you look at the way Brighton does business, they scout so well. They get these players in that no one’s even heard of. The next week, they sell them for £60million or £70million.
